Luxury apartments currently occupy the site of what was Powers Department Store. Part of the original building was built in 1893 and expanded in 1900 to fill the entire length of the block along 5th Street from Nicollet Avenue to Marquette Avenue (map). The store at this location closed in 1985. The building was torn down in 1993.
